The village of Mcely appears in a parchment of 1252. In 1698 Count Octavian Ladislav of Waldstein built a Baroque hunting château here. Baron Jan Filip Wessenberg-Ampringen bought it in 1808, and in 1841 the dilapidated Baroque building was rebuilt as a new residence in an austere classical style.

In 1869 Count Filip Boos-Waldeck sold the estate to Prince Hugo Maxmilian of the Thurn-Taxis family, which had its principal seat in nearby Loučeň; the prince and his descendants owned Mcely until 1948. In 1903 the west wing was demolished because of its poor foundations, and a costly renovation followed when Prince Erich Thurn-Taxis married Countess Gabriela Kinsky.

After 1948 the château was used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior and was left in a dilapidated state. A demanding renovation began on 15 June 2004, led by Inéz and James Cusumano; the château opened to its first guests in 2006, and the Mcely Bouquet spa followed in 2010. Today it is a five-star hotel with an English park, a restaurant and a spa.
