Château de Belet

Château de Belet is a 15th-century relic in the Périgord, with battlements and towers — a medieval-Renaissance castle crowning its own private hill, above 110 acres (45 hectares) of ancient forest and valley, beside the old Roman road to the Camino de Santiago. The 15th-century architecture survives in its purest form: twin wine cellars, a bishop's hiding place, round and square towers, and extensive hand-carved stone and oak.

Today its 7 bed-and-breakfast rooms are named for artists such as Matisse and Monet; the Monet room sits within the château's tower, with exposed stone and a luxury spa bathroom beneath centuries-old beams.

The château's original 15th-century defensive features — battlements, twin round and square towers — remain structurally intact rather than decorative additions, distinguishing Belet from properties whose medieval appearance is purely stylistic.

The surviving bishop's hiding place, a specific defensive or concealment feature, ties Belet to the religious and political tensions of its era, a detail rarely preserved this clearly at other French château-hotels.

The estate's position beside the old Roman road toward the Camino de Santiago situates Belet along a historic pilgrimage and trade route predating the château itself by many centuries.

The château's position in Saint-Aquilin, within the Périgord, gives guests staying at Belet access to the wider Dordogne countryside, about 30 minutes from Périgueux.
