Château de Briançon

Château de Briançon dates to the 11th century when the eponymous family settled there, and the estate underwent numerous transformations over the centuries. In 1941, it was sold to the Paris-based charitable association La Résidence Sociale, which used it over the decades as an orphanage housing children from Paris, a health resort, a nursery, and a medical-educational institute, before converting it into a hotel in 2013.

The château is still managed by the same non-profit association, recognized as being of public utility since 1922, whose mission is to support vulnerable people and people with disabilities. Today its rooms sit within the 17th-century château on a 10-hectare park, with flat-screen TVs and wooden floors throughout; room types include King Rooms, Superior Doubles, and Four-Bedroom Houses.

The château's remarkable succession of charitable uses — orphanage, health resort, nursery, and medical-educational institute — spanning more than seven decades before its 2013 hotel conversion, gives Briançon one of the most unusual institutional histories in this entire French collection.
