Château de la Ballue

Château de la Ballue was built on medieval foundations dating to the late 10th century, when it was a strategic fortress on the Brittany-Dol border. It was rebuilt around 1620 by Gilles de Ruellan, a commoner ennobled by Henry IV who made his fortune in the arms trade. The château hosted Balzac, Victor Hugo and Musset, and housed one of Brittany's largest glassworks between 1820 and 1866.

In 1939, it sheltered young Jewish and Catholic girls, and it later served as a refuge for a Saint-Malo college. Left to ruin, the estate was saved and restored from 1973 by Claude Arthaud, who also created the estate's now-celebrated formal gardens. Today just 5 rooms occupy the historic château, set within 2 hectares of parkland.

Gilles de Ruellan's ennoblement by Henry IV, funded by arms-trade wealth rather than inherited noble status, reflects the social mobility available to successful merchants in early modern France, a path that reshaped the composition of the French nobility over the following centuries.

The château's role sheltering young Jewish and Catholic girls in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, ties this Breton estate to a specific and consequential chapter of wartime protection, distinct from the more commonly documented histories of medieval sieges found elsewhere in this collection.

Claude Arthaud's 1973 restoration and creation of the formal gardens gave La Ballue its present identity as much through landscape design as through architectural preservation, resulting in gardens now classified as "remarkable" and considered among Brittany's finest.
