Château de Trigance

Château de Trigance was built in the 11th century, though some sources trace its origins to the 9th century, as a fortress of meditation built by monks of the Abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille. It belonged to the Counts of Provence and served successively as a fortress, a noble residence, and a holiday home. Its rich chivalric history, running up to the Revolution, also carries traces of the Knights Templar. Restored in the 1960s, it preserves the authentic character of its original remains. Since 2020, a young couple, Hortense and Théo, have run this 3-star hotel-restaurant.

Today its 10 rooms, with views over the surrounding mountains and valleys, are spread across the castle's former towers and wings, each uniquely furnished in a historic style — period furniture, tapestries, stone walls.

The castle's documented possible origin as a 9th-century monastic meditation fortress, if accurate, would place Trigance among the oldest sites in this collection, predating its 11th-century rebuilding by roughly two centuries.

The estate's chivalric history running to the Revolution, including traces of Knights Templar association, ties Trigance to the broader medieval military-religious orders active in Provence.

The 1960s restoration, followed by the current owners' stewardship since 2020, reflects a relatively long modern history of careful preservation rather than recent conversion from ruin.

The castle's position atop a rocky outcrop above the village of Trigance, within the Verdon Regional Nature Park, gives guests staying here dramatic panoramic views over the Gorges du Verdon.
