Château de Vault de Lugny

Château de Vault de Lugny's roots trace to 1120; the current structure was built between the 13th and 17th centuries and is surrounded by a moat, at the edge of the Morvan nature reserve. It endured royal upheavals and was razed by Louis XI before being rebuilt. The estate was derelict until a local family bought it in 1967 and restored it into the hotel it is today.

Today its 13 rooms and 3 suites sit across 70 to 100 acres of parkland, alongside a 14th-century dungeon (a listed historic monument), moats, a working farm, an organic vegetable garden, and a truffle plantation. It is one of the few properties in Burgundy pairing a Michelin Key hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The 1120 origin date and the surviving 14th-century dungeon give Vault de Lugny a documented history stretching back nearly nine centuries, with the moat and dungeon offering tangible physical evidence of its medieval defensive origins.

Louis XI's decision to raze the château during royal upheavals ties this property to the broader pattern of French kings dismantling potentially rebellious noble strongholds during the consolidation of royal power in the late medieval period.
