Château Royal de Benays

The site of Benais appears in records from the 12th century, referred to as "Beniacum"; the château itself is documented from the 13th century, with early lords including Hugues de Beaucay, who accompanied Louis IX on the 1248 crusade. The present structure was built in the 16th century atop an older fortified gate flanked by two towers.

Ownership passed through the Laval, du Bellay, and Montmorency families — Angevin nobility through the 17th century — and Francis I was received here in 1532. The château was partially destroyed before the French Revolution but kept its outbuildings and the two gate towers, which were incorporated into a new building erected in the 19th century. It was listed as a Historical Monument in 1929, and is now under active restoration as a hotel; guest reviews describe hearing "stories of the stones" and the restoration in progress as part of the stay.

Hugues de Beaucay's participation in Louis IX's 1248 crusade ties Benais to one of medieval France's most significant military and religious expeditions, connecting this relatively modest château to the broader crusading movement of the 13th century.

Francis I's reception at Benais in 1532 places the château within the social orbit of one of Renaissance France's most consequential monarchs, during a period of shifting alliances among the Angevin nobility who held the property.

The survival of two medieval gate towers within an otherwise 19th-century reconstruction gives Benais a genuinely layered architectural history, though the exact distribution of guest rooms between the historic towers and the newer wings has not been confirmed in available research.

The château's status as an active, ongoing restoration project — rather than a finished luxury property — gives guests a distinctive, evolving experience, with the story of the building's recovery forming part of the stay itself.
