Eyba Castle

Schlosshotel Eyba, in the Thuringian Forest near Saalfeld, was built in 1553 by the von Könitz brothers on the site of an older settlement court. Essential parts of the original structure still stand today, its walls having survived the destruction of the Thirty Years' War in the following century — a rare degree of continuity for a rural Thuringian estate of this age.

In 1997, Schlosshotel Eyba GmbH was founded to convert the estate into a conference and hotel facility, an initiative backed initially by Karlsruher Versicherung and later by Württembergische Versicherung. Today the property offers 44 rooms — 18 doubles and 26 singles — split between the historic 1553 castle building and a separate, modern guest house whose bedroom wing was designed with passive-cooling architecture to stay comfortable even above 30°C without air conditioning noise, alongside valley views.

The survival of the castle's original 1553 walls through the Thirty Years' War is genuinely notable given how thoroughly that conflict devastated much of rural Germany, including numerous castles and estates across Thuringia specifically — Eyba's continuity offers a rare, largely intact example of mid-16th-century Thuringian estate architecture.

The insurance-industry backing behind the 1997 conversion, first from Karlsruher Versicherung and later Württembergische Versicherung, reflects a specific and somewhat unusual pattern of corporate investment in German castle-hotel restoration, where insurance companies have occasionally funded historic property conversions as both a commercial hospitality venture and a corporate training/conference asset.

The modern guest house's passive-cooling design — engineered to remain comfortable above 30°C without air conditioning — reflects a genuinely thoughtful piece of contemporary building design integrated alongside the historic castle, prioritizing quiet, low-energy comfort over conventional mechanical cooling systems.

The Thuringian Forest surrounding Eyba is one of central Germany's most significant upland forest regions, offering extensive hiking and a genuinely different, wooded highland landscape compared to the river-valley or vineyard settings of many other castle-hotels in this collection.

Saalfeld, a short drive from Eyba, is known for its Feengrotten (Fairy Grottoes), a former slate mine turned show cave famous for its unusually colorful mineral formations, giving guests staying at the castle an easy and distinctive day-trip option beyond the surrounding forest itself.
