Gutenfels Castle

Gutenfels Castle was built in 1222 by the Lords of Falkenstein-Münzenberg on a cliff above the Rhine at Kaub, conceived as a prime example of Staufer-period fortification and paired functionally with the mid-river Pfalzgrafenstein Castle to help secure tolls on river traffic passing below. In 1277, the castle and the town of Kaub passed into the Electorate of the Palatinate, cementing its role within one of the medieval Rhineland's more significant territorial powers.

The castle's defensive credentials were tested directly in 1504, when it withstood a weeks-long siege by the troops of the Landgrave of Hesse — a successful defence after which the name "Gutenfels" ("good rock") is thought to have become the castle's common name. After centuries of various uses, the castle returned to life as a boutique hotel in 2022, its rooms restored within the historic walls and, for larger groups, available as a full exclusive-use castle rental.
