Staufeneck Castle

Staufeneck is a spur castle ruin above the town of Salach in the Göppingen district of Baden-Württemberg, with sources disagreeing on whether it was founded in 1080 or as late as 1240. What survives from the original medieval fortification is substantial for a "ruin": a deep moat, the ring wall, the outer walls of the old palace, and an impressive round keep — enough to define the site's character even after centuries of decay. The castle has been put to hospitality use since 1927, making it one of the longer-running castle-hotel operations in this collection by that measure alone.

The hotel as it exists today, however, dates almost entirely to 2000–2001, when two entrepreneurial families acquired the complete castle complex and built a new 5-star hotel within a single year under architect Klaus Schurr, deliberately using half-timbered construction to bring the appearance of the old outer castle back to life against the preserved historic walls. A more recent expansion added a renovated and roof-extended historic barn to the building complex. The result is a genuine hybrid: guests are unmistakably inside the footprint and preserved defensive walls of a centuries-old ruin, but the rooms themselves are new-built rather than restored historic fabric — worth knowing plainly rather than assuming this is an unbroken medieval interior.

The disputed founding date itself reflects a common problem in medieval castle scholarship, where early records are sparse or ambiguous and later historians reconstruct dates from indirect evidence such as architectural style, family genealogies or first documentary mentions rather than a single definitive founding charter. Staufeneck's case, with a roughly 160-year span between the two proposed dates, illustrates just how much uncertainty can persist even for a well-studied regional fortification.

The one-year construction timeline for the 2000–2001 hotel building, remarkable for a project of this scale and historical sensitivity, reflects a deliberate and well-resourced restoration effort by the two founding families, who evidently prioritized speed alongside careful integration with the surviving medieval walls, moat and keep.

The castle's Swabian setting places it within a region known for its own distinct culinary and cultural traditions, reflected directly in the hotel's more casual restaurant, which blends Swabian dishes with European and Asian influences — a combination that gives Staufeneck's dining identity a more international register than the purely regional or French-influenced menus found at some other German castle-hotels.

The wellness facility's heated panoramic outdoor pool and sauna, both taking advantage of the castle's elevated spur position, give guests sweeping views over the surrounding countryside while bathing — a genuinely modern amenity integrated thoughtfully into the historic site's naturally dramatic setting.
