Castel Rundegg

There is some variation in historical sources regarding the exact date of Castel Rundegg's origins. The original core dates to the 14th century, when it consisted of a simple fortified tower, though it is presumed to have been built in 1154. In the 17th century it underwent extensive restructuring that transformed it from an austere medieval building into a noble residence, roofing the tower and expanding the main building with side towers, gardens, and an exterior crenellated wall.

In 1621, Christoph Maminger transferred the residence to the Grisons nobleman Jakob von Mohr, and Archduke Leopold granted it full rights and freedoms as a noble residence on March 3, 1625. In 1684 the castle passed to Ferdinand von Kiebach zu Ried, whose widow Dorothea transferred it in 1714 to Baron Bernhardus Paravizini von Capelli von Trahora. In 1978 it was transformed into a luxury hotel with one of Italy's first "beauty farm" wellness centers.

The uncertainty around Castel Rundegg's exact founding date, with sources presuming 1154 but only documenting a 14th-century tower, reflects the broader difficulty of dating early medieval South Tyrolean fortifications precisely, where written records often postdate actual construction by generations.
