Castello di Spessa

Castello di Spessa has a defensive core dating to the 13th century, but its present appearance — crenellated towers, ogival windows — comes from a Neo-Gothic restoration completed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which reimagined the medieval fortress as a romantic residence. Giacomo Casanova spent time here in 1773, an episode the castle now leans into as part of its brand identity ("Romance is in our nature"). Lorenzo Da Ponte, the Venetian librettist behind Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and "Le nozze di Figaro," also has documented ties to the estate.

In the 20th century the property was converted into a wine and golf resort, drawing on the terroir of the Collio Goriziano — one of Italy's most sought-after white wine zones. Today Castello di Spessa combines wine production, an 18-hole golf course, and four distinct accommodation areas spread across the estate, keeping the original castle as the symbolic heart and the most exclusive rooms of the complex.

The 19th-century Neo-Gothic restoration that gave Spessa its present silhouette reflects a broader European trend of reimagining older fortresses in a more romantic, castle-like style — meaning the towers and battlements visitors see today are a deliberate 19th-century architectural statement rather than surviving medieval fabric.
