Montalbano Castle

Castello di Montalbano is a medieval castle roughly 1,500 years old, whose rooms are restored cells originally inhabited by the friars of the San Marco convent. Each room preserves its own name and design inspired by this religious and historical heritage — among them the "Savonarola Cell," with stone walls and a round bed, the "Michelangelo Room," with medieval terracotta floors and Carrara marble, and the "Beato Angelico" room.

Today the castle combines this monastic heritage with modern comforts: handcrafted wooden furniture, private bathrooms, air conditioning, and flat-screen TVs. It has a panoramic terrace where guests can enjoy views over Florence, and some rooms include hot tubs with panoramic city views.

The castle's rooms, named directly for Savonarola, Michelangelo, and Fra Angelico, connect Montalbano to some of the most consequential figures of the Florentine Renaissance and its religious upheavals, giving the property a curated historical narrative distinct from a generic period-styling approach.

The conversion of the San Marco convent's original monastic cells into guest rooms represents a genuine adaptive reuse of religious architecture for hospitality, preserving the cells' historic proportions and character rather than merging them into larger modern rooms.
