San Fabiano Castle

Castello di San Fabiano is in fact a small historic hamlet in the Crete Senesi region, just 12 km from Siena, between the Chianti and the Val d'Orcia. The complex is made up of a 12th-century tower, the manor villa, farm buildings, and a church built in the year 867 dedicated to San Fabiano. The San Fabiano tower was part of a system of watchtowers along the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrimage route to Rome.

The complex was restored in 1950 by the Fiorentini family, who transformed the old watchtower and its farm outbuildings into a historic residence. Today guests are personally welcomed by the owners, in a setting of three hectares of parkland divided into distinct gardens.

The 867 AD church predates most of the structures found across this collection by several centuries, giving San Fabiano one of the oldest confirmed dates of any element in the Italy castle-hotel list.

The tower's role within the Via Francigena's watchtower network ties San Fabiano to the same medieval pilgrimage infrastructure connected to properties like Castel Pietraio elsewhere in this collection, part of a broader chain of fortified points along the route to Rome.

The Fiorentini family's personal, hands-on hospitality since 1950 gives San Fabiano a genuinely small-scale, family-run character distinct from the more corporately managed resort properties in this collection.
