Ourém Castle crowns a hill in central Portugal, a few kilometres from the sanctuary of Fátima, its present form owed largely to Count Afonso, the 4th Count of Ourém, who remodelled the medieval fortification in the 15th century and built a palace inside its walls — the castle is accordingly also known as the Paço dos Condes de Ourém, the palace of the Counts of Ourém. The castle has been classified a National Monument since 1910, recognising its significance among Portugal's medieval fortified sites.

The pousada that now welcomes overnight guests is not the castle itself, but the medieval hamlet at its foot: a row of small whitewashed houses joined with a 15th-century hospital of the Misericórdia, the charitable religious institution that operated hospitals across Portugal from the late medieval period onward. Restoring this hamlet rather than converting the castle's own interior gives the pousada a genuinely different character from some of Portugal's other castle-hotels — guests stay among the ordinary houses of a medieval settlement, not inside a noble household.

Rooms are spread across three buildings in the old hamlet, with contemporary interior lines, wooden floors and private bathrooms rather than an attempt to recreate medieval interiors; many look out over the surrounding valley, and some overlook the property's pool. The effect is a stay genuinely inside the walled medieval town — narrow streets, stone walls, and the castle itself a short walk up the hill — without claiming to be something the hamlet buildings never were.

Ourém's position a few kilometres from Fátima, one of the Catholic world's most visited pilgrimage sites, makes the pousada a practical base for visitors combining the sanctuary with central Portugal's castle and monastery circuit, including the Convent of Christ at nearby Tomar.

History

Count Afonso, the 4th Count of Ourém (1402–1460), remodelled the castle in the 15th century and built a palace inside it, also known as the Paço dos Condes de Ourém. The castle has been classified a National Monument since 1910. The medieval hamlet at the foot of the castle was later restored as a pousada, joining a row of small whitewashed houses with a 15th-century hospital of the Misericórdia.
