Ram Fortress is one of the best-preserved Ottoman fortresses in Serbia — a compact pentagonal citadel perched directly above the point where the Mlava River joins the Danube, at a strategic river crossing used since ancient times. Built by the Ottomans between 1415 and 1433 and substantially reinforced by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, the fortress controlled the Danube crossing on the road between Belgrade and the Ottoman heartland. Its five towers and curtain walls survive largely intact, offering views over the Danube towards Romania and across the flat Wallachian plain. The surrounding area is known for the Silver Lake (Srebrno jezero), a popular Serbian summer resort, making Ram a natural addition to a regional visit.
History
The Ottomans built the fortress at Ram around 1415, taking advantage of the ancient river crossing. Suleiman the Magnificent reinforced it in the mid-16th century as a key link in his Danube fortification chain during the Hungarian campaigns. It passed to Austrian, then Serbian control in the 18th–19th centuries. The fortress was preserved and opened as a heritage site in the 20th century.
How to Visit
Ram is 110 km east of Belgrade on the Danube road via Požarevac. By car from Belgrade take the E75 south then east towards Požarevac and Veliko Gradište (2 hours). The Silver Lake resort area is 10 km north, and Golubac Fortress is 50 km downstream — combine both for a Danube fortress day trip.
