Üçhisar Castle is the highest point in Cappadocia — a massive volcanic tuff pinnacle 60 metres tall, entirely honeycombed with rooms, tunnels, storage chambers, and staircases carved directly into the rock over many centuries. The extraordinary natural formation was first used as a fortress in Byzantine times, its labyrinthine interior providing refuge against Arab raids. From the summit, on clear days the entire Cappadocian landscape unfolds — the fairy chimneys of Göreme, the valleys of Love and Rose, the distant snow-capped peak of Mount Erciyes, and dozens of hot air balloons drifting at dawn over the landscape below. The exterior rock face is studded with pigeon houses — small carved niches used for centuries by local farmers to collect pigeon droppings as fertiliser — giving the castle its characteristic pockmarked appearance.

History

The volcanic tuff pinnacle at Üçhisar was carved and inhabited from at least Byzantine times (6th–7th centuries), when the network of rooms and tunnels provided refuge from Arab raids across Anatolia. It was expanded through the medieval period as the region passed between Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman control. The village of Üçhisar grew around its base, and the rock continued to be used for storage and habitation into the 20th century. Some sections have been periodically closed for structural safety consolidation as the soft tuff erodes.

How to Visit

Üçhisar is 5 km west of Göreme, the main tourist base of Cappadocia. Dolmuş minibuses connect Üçhisar to Göreme and Nevşehir throughout the day. The castle entrance is in the centre of Üçhisar village. Hot air balloon tours — the classic Cappadocia experience — offer aerial views of the castle at sunrise. Combine with the Göreme Open Air Museum (UNESCO), Devrent Valley, and Zelve Open Air Museum on a full Cappadocia itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Small carved niches on the exterior of the rock used to house pigeons, whose droppings were collected as valuable fertiliser for Cappadocian vineyards and orchards. Thousands of such niches cover the valley walls throughout the region.
