About This Tour
In the 1280s, Edward I of England built an Iron Ring of castles around North Wales to consolidate his conquest — the most ambitious and expensive castle-building programme in medieval European history. Caernarfon and Conwy are the two greatest survivals: both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, both still largely intact after 700 years, both rising from the water's edge in a way that makes them look exactly as a medieval castle should. This small-group day trip from Manchester covers both in a single extraordinary day through the mountains of Snowdonia.

- ✓Explore Conwy Castle and its complete medieval town walls

Itinerary
Begin at Conwy — a castle and walled town so complete that you can still walk the full circuit of medieval walls. Built by Edward I between 1283 and 1289, the eight towers and two great halls are remarkably intact. Views from the battlements over the Conwy estuary are superb.
The centrepiece of Edward I's Iron Ring — a polygonal castle of immense scale with colour-banded masonry influenced by the walls of Constantinople. In 1284, the future Edward II was born here and presented to the Welsh as their new Prince of Wales. In 1969, Prince Charles was invested here in the same ceremony. The Eagle Tower is the finest surviving medieval tower in Britain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are both Conwy and Caernarfon UNESCO World Heritage Sites?
They are part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd — a UNESCO site recognising Edward I's complete castle and fortified town complexes as the finest example of late 13th-century military architecture in Europe.
Can I do this trip from Liverpool or Chester instead?
Yes — the same operator runs very similar tours departing from Liverpool and Chester, which are slightly closer to North Wales.
