Take bus 320 from Amsterdam Centraal Station directly to Muiderslot — it stops at the castle entrance. Alternatively, the EBS bus from Weesp (reachable by train from Amsterdam in 25 min) runs to Muiden village. By bicycle from Amsterdam, the route along the Gein and Vecht rivers takes approximately 1.5 hours each way and is extremely scenic. The castle car park is also accessible for drivers. Cross the drawbridge into Muiderslot's circular courtyard — a round fortress built in 1285 by Count Floris V of Holland, who was murdered here by his own knights in 1296 in a conspiracy involving the English crown. The castle was rebuilt in its current form shortly after and has remained in near-original condition ever since. Explore the knight's hall where medieval banquets were held, the original castle kitchen, the dungeon, the weapons and armour room, and the private chambers. Then climb to the battlements for panoramic views over the Vecht river and the flat Dutch polder landscape stretching to the horizon. The castle gardens are included in the ticket.

Who was Count Floris V?
Count Floris V of Holland (1254–1296) built the original Muiderslot in 1285 as a toll and control point on the Vecht river. He was one of medieval Holland's most capable rulers — known as 'der keerlen god' (the peasants' friend) for defending the rights of common people against the nobility. He was lured to Muiderslot and murdered by a group of Dutch and English knights in 1296 who opposed his policies and his alliance with France. The castle was rebuilt after his death and named after him.
