About This Tour
Rising from the waters of the Vecht river just 30 minutes east of Amsterdam, Muiderslot is the Netherlands' most beautiful and best-preserved medieval castle. Built in 1285 by Count Floris V of Holland, this circular moated fortress looks exactly as a storybook castle should — complete with round towers, battlements, a drawbridge and a perfectly intact great hall. This small-group half-day tour from Amsterdam brings you inside its walls for a guided exploration of the knight's hall, dungeon, and weapons room, followed by free time to walk the ramparts and explore the surrounding Dutch polders.

Itinerary
Depart Amsterdam through the flat Dutch polders. The guide introduces Count Floris V, the castle's founder and one of medieval Holland's most colourful figures — he was eventually murdered here by his own knights in 1296.
Cross the drawbridge into Muiderslot's circular courtyard. The guided tour covers the knight's hall (where banquets were held), the original castle kitchen, the dungeon, the weapons and armour room, and the private chambers. Then climb to the battlements for panoramic views over the Vecht river and the surrounding green polders stretching to the horizon.
Stroll the small harbour village of Muiden, where the castle's reflection shimmers in the marina. Optional castle café visit before the return to Amsterdam.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Muiderslot suitable for children?
Very much so — the drawbridge, dungeon and knight demonstrations make it one of the most child-friendly castles in Europe.
Can I visit Muiderslot independently?
Yes, but the guided tour provides context that transforms the visit. The castle's interior stories are poorly explained by signage alone.
How long is the total trip?
Approximately 5 hours including travel time — ideal as a morning or afternoon excursion from Amsterdam.
