Cluj: Turda Salt Mine, Corvin Castle & Alba Carolina Day Trip

Salina Turda is one of the most unexpected attractions in Central Europe — a former Roman and medieval salt mine that was actively extracted until 1932, now transformed into an underground recreational and visitor complex that descends 120 metres below the Transylvanian plateau. The Romans extracted salt here in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD; commercial extraction continued through the Habsburg period until the mine was closed. The preserved extraction chambers are on an extraordinary scale: the Rudolf Mine shaft descends into a vast elliptical void carved entirely from halite (rock salt), its walls glistening white and amber, with a central island containing a rowing lake, a Ferris wheel, an amphitheatre, a mini-golf course, and a billiards hall — all operating 120 metres underground. The air at this depth has a constant humidity and temperature (10–12°C) that has made the mine a therapeutic destination for respiratory conditions since the 19th century. The guided visit covers the main descent to the Rudolf Mine chamber, the subterranean lake, and the panoramic lift back to the surface. Entry is included.

Corvin Castle — Castelul Corvinilor — is the most spectacular Gothic fortress in Romania and one of the most extraordinary in Eastern Europe: a towering complex of battlements, turrets, and drawbridges rising from a rocky outcrop above the Zlasti River, built and repeatedly expanded by the Hunyadi family across the 14th and 15th centuries. John Hunyadi, Regent of Hungary and military commander of the Christian defence against the Ottoman advance, made Hunedoara his primary residence and transformed the existing fortification into a palace-fortress of international ambition — comparable in scale and quality of detail to the contemporary Gothic castles of France and Burgundy. The castle's highlights include the Knights' Hall (one of the finest Gothic interiors in Transylvania, with vaulted ceilings and enormous Gothic windows), the Chapel of the White Knight, the Council Tower with panoramic views over the river gorge, and the castle well — allegedly dug by Turkish prisoners over 15 years, who were promised freedom upon finding water. They found it; they were not freed. In the dungeon: Vlad III (Vlad the Impaler, the historical basis for Dracula) was held here by John Hunyadi's son Matthias Corvinus between 1462 and 1476. Entry is included; the guided visit covers all main interiors.

Lunch is included in the tour price. A restaurant stop in Hunedoara for a traditional Romanian meal before the afternoon drive to Alba Iulia. Typical Transylvanian dishes: ciorbă de burtă (tripe soup), sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls with pork mince, rice, and dill, served with sour cream), mămăligă (polenta), and grilled pork. Note: the GYG itinerary lists the lunch stop as 'Optional, Extra fee' — this refers to an upgraded or à la carte restaurant option. The standard included lunch is confirmed as part of the tour package.

Alba Carolina is the largest Baroque military fortification in Romania — a star-shaped citadel with six polygonal bastions built by the Habsburgs between 1714 and 1738 on the site of a Roman castrum (Apulum, a major legionary fortress in the province of Dacia). The citadel walls stretch for four kilometres; the seven fortified gates include the monumental Gate III — a Baroque triumphal arch decorated with military trophies and allegorical figures, built in 1716 to celebrate Habsburg power in Transylvania. Within the walls, the Cathedral of the Coronation (built 1921–1922) is where Ferdinand I and Queen Maria were crowned King and Queen of Greater Romania in 1922 — the first coronation of the unified Romanian state after the 1918 union of Transylvania, Wallachia, and Moldavia. The older 11th-century Romanesque cathedral beside it contains the tomb of John Hunyadi — the same commander whose castle you visited at Hunedoara — and funerary monuments of John Zápolya and Isabella Jagiellon. The guided visit covers the citadel walls and gates, both cathedrals, and the Roman archaeological layers visible within the fortification. Access to the citadel is free; guided tour is included.
