According to the Route of Castles and Palaces, the château grew from a wooden fortress built in 1554 by Zdeněk Žampach of Potštejn. Towards the end of the 17th century it was converted into an early Baroque château with a detached tower, and around 1730 the tower was pulled down and a connecting wing was added, giving the building most of its present appearance.
Other sources give an older Gothic fortress called Kyšperk on the nearby Hradisko hill, first recorded in 1308, so the early history is told differently by different sources. The town itself was called Kyšperk until 1950, when four villages merged into Letohrad.
The château was extensively rebuilt in the 1990s and now houses a hotel and restaurant, a library, schools and exhibitions, including a town museum with a Jára Cimrman room and a half-hour guided tour of Baroque to Art Nouveau interiors with works by Alfons Mucha, who rented a studio in Letohrad for some time.
