Raasepori Castle (Swedish: Raseborgs slott) is the most extensive medieval fortification in mainland Finland — a castle ruin on a rocky outcrop near the Swedish-speaking coastal town of Ekenäs, approximately 85 km west of Helsinki. The castle was built from around 1370 by the Swedish Crown as an administrative and military centre for the western coast of Finland, positioned on a rock that then projected into a sheltered sea inlet. The gradual silting of that inlet over the subsequent centuries changed the landscape around the castle entirely: what was once a sea approach is now a meadow, and the castle's formerly commanding position over the water is only apparent from maps and historical records.

History
Raasepori was constructed as part of the Swedish Crown's defensive network along the Finnish coast — a system of castles and fortified harbours designed to protect Sweden's eastern possessions from Danish and Russian threats. The castle's construction date of around 1370 places it in the reign of King Albert of Mecklenburg, who commissioned several coastal fortifications in the Baltic region.
The castle served as the seat of the bailiff administering the Raseborg district — a jurisdiction covering much of the southwestern Finnish coast. Through the 14th and 15th centuries it was periodically under threat: Danish raids along the Baltic coast reached this far east on several occasions, and the castle was besieged and damaged in 1365 and again in the later 15th century. Despite these episodes it was never taken by assault.
The castle's end came not through conquest but through obsolescence. The gradual silting of the sea inlet that had given Raasepori its strategic value removed the castle's reason for existence; by the mid-16th century the Swedish administration had relocated to better-positioned bases. The ruins were left to decay through the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Systematic archaeological investigation began in the 1890s, and the site was opened to visitors in the early 20th century.
