Château de Cîteaux

The origins of the building trace to 1098, when the Cistercian order was founded at the Abbey of Cîteaux, about 35 km northeast of Meursault. The Dukes of Burgundy granted the monks a plot in Meursault's Vieux-Clos to grow vines, where they also built the vaulted cellars that remain intact today. In the 19th century, a bourgeois reception château was built on these historic foundations, designed for entertaining at the heart of the vineyard — today the site combines both legacies, monastic and bourgeois, under one silhouette. It opened as a hotel on July 24, 2026, with 18 rooms of a planned total of 35, to be completed between 2026 and January 2027, under the Fontenille Collection.

Today its 18 currently operating rooms and suites (growing toward 35) are all within the 19th-century château, built above the 12th-century Cistercian cellars.

The site's documented monastic origins in 1098, nearly 800 years before the current hotel's 2026 opening, give Cîteaux a genuinely ancient winemaking lineage beneath its much more recent bourgeois château shell.

The survival of the original vaulted Cistercian cellars intact beneath the 19th-century building gives guests staying at Cîteaux direct physical contact with medieval monastic architecture, not just a themed reference to it.

The property's very recent July 2026 opening, with room inventory still expanding toward a planned 35 total, means availability and on-site amenities may still be scaling up compared with long-established neighboring estates.

The château's position in Meursault, at the heart of the Burgundy vineyards just minutes from Beaune, gives guests staying at Cîteaux easy access to one of France's most celebrated wine regions.
