Château-Hôtel de Bourron

Château-Hôtel de Bourron stands on the remains of a feudal fortress with foundations dating to the 14th century; the current building was constructed in the 16th century, surrounded by a whitewater moat. The site itself has been occupied since Neolithic times. Notable historical residents include Stanislas Leczinski, Marie Leczinska, and — by tradition — d'Artagnan. Barbizon School painters and writers stayed here for its proximity to the Fontainebleau forest.

The château was purchased in 1878 by the Montesquiou-Fézensac family, who still live there today, and it is classified as a Monument Historique. Today its 16 rooms sit across 104 acres of grounds within the Fontainebleau Forest, split between the historic château and the separate Maison d'Artagnan building.

The site's occupation since Neolithic times, long before the 14th-century feudal fortress, gives Bourron one of the deepest continuous human-use histories documented among the properties in this collection.

The traditional association with d'Artagnan, alongside the confirmed stays of Polish royal figures Stanislas Leczinski and Marie Leczinska, gives Bourron a blend of documented and legendary historical connections typical of many long-held French noble estates.

The Montesquiou-Fézensac family's unbroken ownership since 1878 — now approaching a century and a half — gives Bourron a genuinely lived-in character, distinct from properties that changed hands multiple times or sat vacant before their hotel conversion.
