Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey originates as a 13th-century fortress, built from stones taken from the nearby village of Bommes. Documented winemaking began in 1618 under Sieur Raymond Peyraguey. The estate was ranked third in the historic 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac, just behind Château d'Yquem and Château La Tour Blanche.

In 2014, Silvio Denz — chairman of Maison Lalique — bought the estate, and the 17th-century manor house underwent a lavish renovation by Lalique designers, opening as a hotel-restaurant in June 2018 to mark the estate's 400th anniversary. The Lalique restaurant earned a Michelin star in its first year and two stars by 2022. Today its 10 rooms and 3 suites sit across two floors, all within the historic manor house. One suite has a dramatic high ceiling beneath a Champs-Élysées chandelier; another sits in the medieval tower with its own reading lounge; a third is a duplex overlooking the historic L'Enclos vineyard plot. A library on the main floor houses a collection of Lalique decanters.

The estate's 1855 Classification ranking, third among all Sauternes and Barsac producers, places Lafaurie-Peyraguey among the most historically prestigious sweet-wine estates in the world, a ranking system that has remained largely unchanged since Napoleon III commissioned it.

Silvio Denz's Lalique-branded renovation connects this centuries-old wine estate to the crystal house's design sensibility, a deliberate pairing of French decorative arts heritage with the estate's own winemaking history.

The rapid arrival of a Michelin star in the restaurant's first year, followed by a second within four years, reflects an unusually fast culinary ascent for a newly reopened historic property.

The surrounding Sauternes appellation, including neighboring Château d'Yquem, gives guests staying at Lafaurie-Peyraguey direct access to one of Bordeaux's most internationally celebrated wine regions, with the city of Bordeaux itself about 45 minutes away.
