Château Saint-Jean

Château Saint-Jean stands on the site of a former Knights Templar commandery, five minutes from the medieval city of Montluçon. Its current owners, Nicole and Jean-Claude Delion, have been tirelessly restoring the property since 2016. The gastronomic restaurant occupies the château's 12th-century chapel. The property has been a member of Relais & Châteaux since 2018.

Today its 19 rooms and suites are spread across three floors, between the château's historic and contemporary wings, overlooking the Saint-Jean park and its pond.

The site's origin as a Knights Templar commandery ties Château Saint-Jean to a military-religious order dissolved in the 14th century, giving the property a documented lineage stretching back roughly eight centuries before its current restoration.

The restaurant's placement inside the surviving 12th-century chapel gives Château Saint-Jean a genuinely unusual dining setting, distinct from the converted stables, orangeries or cellars used for dining at many other French château-hotels.

The Delions' restoration work since 2016, culminating in Relais & Châteaux membership in 2018, reflects a relatively fast transformation from a historic ruin-adjacent site into a recognized five-star property within less than a decade.

The château's position five minutes from medieval Montluçon gives guests staying at Saint-Jean easy access to one of Allier's best-preserved historic town centers.
