Altenhausen Castle

Schloss Altenhausen combines a round medieval core fortress with a Renaissance-style residential wing, later joined by a tall neo-Gothic hall with its own built-in keep. The oldest surviving sections of the building date to the 15th and 16th centuries, before the complex was substantially rebuilt in the 17th century by Alexander von der Schulenburg using earlier building fabric that survives to this day. A fire in the early 19th century led to a major renovation in 1834, and by the end of that century the fortress had been converted into a more castle-like residence, though it never fully lost its fortified character.

After the Second World War the von Schulenburg family was dispossessed, and the estate eventually found new purpose as a youth hostel, hotel and equestrian activity center. Today's complex includes the historic round core, a Renaissance residential building, and a working courtyard (Wirtschaftshof) with Late Gothic, Baroque and Historicist outbuildings to the west — one of which, the former grain store, now houses the "Alter Speicher" restaurant serving guests in a rustic, medieval-adjacent setting.

The property's dual operation as both a conventional hotel and a youth hostel is genuinely unusual among the castle-hotels covered in this collection: rather than a single hospitality product, Altenhausen maintains two parallel accommodation categories — DEHOGA-rated 3-star double rooms and bunk-bed multi-occupancy rooms typical of youth hostel bookings — with separate contact arrangements for the "Jugendhotel" (youth hotel) side of the operation.

The von der Schulenburg family's 17th-century rebuilding of Altenhausen, incorporating earlier medieval fabric rather than starting from scratch, reflects a common and practical approach to castle reconstruction across war-damaged Central Germany during that period, preserving what could be salvaged while adapting the structure to contemporary residential needs.

The equestrian activity centre operating alongside the hotel and hostel gives Altenhausen a genuinely active, program-oriented character distinct from the more purely restful or scenic castle-hotels found elsewhere in this collection, positioning it as a destination for riding holidays and school or youth group trips as much as for a conventional overnight stay.
