Basthorst Castle

Schloss Basthorst was built in 1823 by the Schack family as a stately manor house, or Herrenhaus, set amid the rolling hills and lake landscape of western Mecklenburg. Its protected monument-status building anchors a much larger estate that later grew to include a separate administrative tower house — the Turmhaus, erected roughly fifty years after the main house and deliberately set apart from it by a stand of trees — reflecting the practical, working character of a 19th-century Mecklenburg estate rather than a single fortified residence.

Today the historic manor forms only one part of a much larger hotel complex. Alongside the original Herrenhaus, the estate now includes the Waldresidenz, a large forest-set building added later to house the wellness area, ballroom and restaurant, giving Schloss Basthorst its present identity as a spa and conference hotel rather than a boutique stay inside a single historic building. The English-style castle park and the Glambecksee lake remain the estate's most enduring historic landscape features.

It's worth stating the room split plainly: of the 92 total rooms and suites across the property, only 19 — roughly one in five — are within the 1823 Herrenhaus itself. The remaining 73 rooms are split between the Waldresidenz (47 rooms, directly connected to the spa) and the Turmhaus (the balance), both genuinely separate buildings on the estate rather than wings of the historic manor. Guests specifically seeking the manor-house experience should confirm a Herrenhaus room at booking rather than assume any room on the property offers it.

The practice of expanding a historic manor's hotel capacity through purpose-built later additions, rather than new construction squeezed into the original building, is a pattern shared by several larger spa and conference-oriented castle-hotels in this collection, where guest volume and modern wellness facilities require considerably more space than a single 19th-century house could accommodate.

Basthorst's position roughly midway between Hamburg and Berlin, with Schwerin — the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern — just 25 minutes away, gives the estate a genuinely convenient location for business travelers and conference groups, a role reflected in its extensive meeting and coworking facilities alongside the spa.

The estate's English-style park, with its mature trees and lakeside setting on the Glambecksee, predates much of the later hotel expansion and remains one of the property's most consistently historic features, offering guests a genuine sense of the 19th-century estate's original landscaped grounds regardless of which building they sleep in.

Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), one of Germany's most recognizable romantic-era palace silhouettes, sits on its own lake island roughly 25 minutes from Basthorst, giving guests staying at the estate an easy and rewarding half-day pairing between a working spa hotel and one of Mecklenburg's grandest historic residences.
