Bodenstein Castle

Burg Bodenstein, perched above the village of Wintzingerode in the Ohmgebirge of northern Eichsfeld, is first documented in 1098 and is regarded as the best-preserved castle in the wider Eichsfeld region. From the mid-15th century until 1945, it was held by the von Wintzingerode family, whose members played a decisive role in shaping the district's history over nearly five centuries of continuous ownership.

After the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was rebuilt in a more residential, palace-like style — the medieval keep was removed to make way for a castle chapel, softening the site's earlier defensive character. Following a comprehensive renovation of the entire complex between 1991 and 1994, Bodenstein now serves as a family recreation and meeting center run by the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, with the bulk of its 45 beds in the main castle building and a small number in a separate coachhouse (Kutscherhaus) on the grounds.
