Colmberg Castle

Colmberg Castle rises on a hill roughly 50 metres above the surrounding Franconian countryside in Bavaria, a former stronghold of the Teutonic Order whose documented history stretches back centuries — sources place a fortification here from at least 1318, though the site's own marketing frames it, more loosely, as 'over 1,000 years old.' Whichever dating one uses, the castle has long served as a defensive and administrative outpost in this stretch of Franconia, roughly midway between the well-known tourist towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Ansbach.

The castle passed into private hands in 1880 and changed ownership several times before the Unbehauen family took it over in 1964; their descendants now run it as a hotel in the third generation.
