Lübbenau Castle

The von Lynar family, originally fortification engineers from Tuscany, acquired the Lübbenau estate in 1621 and held it for more than three centuries. The castle seen today dates largely from a major neoclassical reconstruction carried out between 1817 and 1839, when the surrounding landscape park was also redesigned — initial plans came from the Potsdam garden director Peter Joseph Lenné, with detailed execution by Carl August Benjamin Siegel. Through the 19th century the family continued to develop the wider estate, expanding its holdings around the castle mill and grounds.

After German reunification, the castle was returned to the Lynar family, who undertook an extensive renovation to convert it into a four-star hotel while preserving its historic fabric. Set at the edge of the Spreewald — a UNESCO biosphere reserve criss-crossed by narrow waterways — the castle ensemble today combines the hotel itself with a holiday residence in the former stable building, the orangery, and the chancery, all arranged around the nine-hectare landscape park.

The von Lynar family's origins as Tuscan fortification engineers reflects a broader pattern of Italian military and architectural expertise migrating into German-speaking Europe during the early modern period, when specialized skills in fortress design were in high demand among regional rulers. Their more-than-400-year tenure at Lübbenau, interrupted only by the East German period before restitution after reunification, places the family's connection to the estate among the longest and most resilient found anywhere in this collection.

Peter Joseph Lenné's involvement in the park's redesign connects Lübbenau to one of 19th-century Germany's most significant landscape architects, whose work also shaped the grounds of Sanssouci and numerous other major Prussian gardens — giving the estate's 9-hectare park a genuine pedigree beyond a purely decorative castle garden.

The restitution of the castle to the Lynar family after German reunification reflects the broader legal and social process by which properties expropriated under East German rule were returned to their pre-war owners or their descendants, a process that shaped the fate of numerous historic estates across the former GDR territory, Lübbenau among them.
