Banfi Castle

The Castello di Poggio alle Mura, whose origins trace to the 12th century, has developed largely between the 9th and 13th centuries, with archaeological evidence — underground chambers cut into tufa rock and Etruscan-era pottery found during recent restoration — suggesting an even older settlement history, later overlaid by Roman-era stonework visible in the entrance arch. In 1983, Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani acquired the castle, folding it into the Banfi wine estate that today spans nearly 3,000 hectares across the Montalcino hills.

Rather than convert the medieval castle itself into guest accommodation, Banfi turned it into the winery's headquarters and tasting facility, while the boutique hotel occupies Il Borgo — an 18th-century stone agricultural village built beneath the castle's protective walls, its 14 rooms and suites carved from the former homes of farmworkers who once served the castle's noble owners. The result is a genuinely dual-building estate: a medieval fortress dedicated to winemaking, and a separate historic hamlet dedicated to hospitality, connected by shared grounds and the Banfi name.

The archaeological layering beneath the castle — Etruscan pottery, tufa-cut chambers, Roman stonework in the entrance arch — points to a settlement history considerably older than the medieval fortification itself, reflecting the long continuity of habitation on this ridge above the Montalcino hills across nearly three millennia.

The Mariani brothers' decision to dedicate the medieval castle to winemaking rather than hospitality reflects a broader philosophy at Banfi, where the estate's identity as one of Montalcino's most significant Brunello producers takes precedence over converting every historic building into guest rooms — a choice that keeps the castle's working winery function genuinely central rather than symbolic.

Il Borgo's transformation from farmworkers' housing into a Relais & Châteaux boutique hotel represents a considerable elevation in the buildings' function, while preserving their original stone construction and village layout — guests today occupy spaces that once housed the agricultural laborers whose work sustained the estate for centuries.

The nearly 3,000 hectares of the wider Banfi estate place it among the largest single wine-producing properties in the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone, giving guests staying at Il Borgo access to a genuinely substantial working vineyard landscape rather than a token estate garden.

Montalcino's hilltop old town, a short drive from the estate, offers guests an easy pairing between the Banfi estate's wine-focused hospitality and the wider medieval heritage and Brunello culture of the surrounding Val d'Orcia region.
