Calatabiano Castle

Today's Castello di San Marco was built from 1689 for Prince Ignazio Sebastiano Gravina Cruyllas, at a time when the Sicilian aristocracy was building leisure residences away from urban centers, taking advantage of Calatabiano's strategic position between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. The original construction responded more to a residential and agricultural logic — overseeing the surrounding wine-growing land — than to a strictly military one.

In the 18th century the property was remodeled to take on the medieval-fortress appearance it retains today: towers, battlements and a defensive profile added over the original residential structure, an architectural phenomenon called "castellization" that was common across 18th- and 19th-century Sicily and mainland Italy, when Romanticism gave the medieval a new aesthetic value. The estate's former winemakers' residence, today converted into luxury accommodation within the hotel complex, is a testament to the property's historical function as both a wine-producing estate and a noble residence.

The "castellization" of an originally residential building reflects a broader 18th- and 19th-century European fashion for retrofitting older, non-defensive structures with medieval-style towers and battlements purely for romantic aesthetic effect — meaning Calatabiano's fortress-like silhouette is a deliberate later addition rather than surviving medieval military architecture.

The estate's dual identity as both a noble residence and a working wine estate, evidenced by the former winemakers' house now converted to guest suites, gives the property an agricultural history alongside its aristocratic one.

The estate's position between Etna and the Ionian coast, plus its proximity to Taormina, gives guests an alternative base for exploring one of Sicily's most visited areas without the premium pricing of the resort town itself.
