Castello Dal Pozzo

Castello Dal Pozzo traces its origins to a Roman castrum built by the Fifth Legion on these hills above Lake Maggiore. Around the year 1000, the Visconti — a noble Milanese family — erected the first medieval fortress on the site. After a long period of decline, the Visconti d'Aragona restored the castle's remains in the 16th century, converting it into an elegant noble residence befitting the family's status.

In the 19th century, Marquis Claudio Dal Pozzo d'Annone commissioned British architect Richard Popplewell Pullan to redesign the complex in the Neo-Gothic Revival style, giving the estate its present striking silhouette above the lake. The estate today comprises three distinct architectural units built at different periods: the Neo-Gothic Castle itself, the 18th-century Visconti Palazzo, and the former Scuderie (stables) — together forming the 45-46 room Castello Dal Pozzo Resort, part of Preferred Hotels & Resorts.

The Roman-era castrum beneath the medieval fortress points to a strategic use of this hilltop above Lake Maggiore stretching back roughly two millennia, long before the Visconti family's involvement gave the site its documented medieval identity.

Richard Popplewell Pullan's involvement connects Castello Dal Pozzo to the wider 19th-century European fashion for Neo-Gothic Revival architecture, in which British architects were frequently commissioned by continental noble families seeking to give older structures a fashionable romantic silhouette.

The estate's division across three genuinely distinct buildings — rather than a single restored castle — reflects the gradual, centuries-long growth of a working noble estate, where new functions (a grander residence, working stables) were added as separate structures rather than folded into the original fortress.
