Castello di Tornano

The origins of Castello di Tornano probably date to shortly after the year 1000, though some sources cite a first mention as early as 790. In 1167, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa seized the fief from the Sienese noble Guarnellotto dei Mezzolombardi and granted it to Ranieri de' Firidolfi-Ricasoli, loyal to Florence; however, the rebellious feudal lord, protected by the Sienese, continued occupying the castle for some time afterward. By 1400 the Ricasoli had notably fortified Tornano.

In the 1970s, Castello di Tornano was acquired by the Selvolini family, after having belonged to the Ricasoli barony for centuries. Today it combines accommodation, wine production, and dining in the heart of the Chianti Classico landscape, with panoramic views from its Tuscan-style rooms.

Frederick Barbarossa's 1167 seizure and grant of Tornano to the Ricasoli ties this castle directly to one of the founding moments of a dynasty whose later codification of the Chianti Classico wine formula would shape the entire region's identity for centuries.

The rebellious feudal lord's continued occupation of the castle even after Barbarossa's formal transfer of ownership illustrates the often-contested, slow-moving nature of medieval feudal authority, where a legal grant did not always translate into immediate physical control.

The Ricasoli family's centuries-long stewardship, ending only with the 1970s sale to the Selvolini family, gives Tornano an ownership history spanning roughly eight centuries under a single dynasty before its more recent transition.

The surrounding Chianti Classico wine route and the town of Gaiole in Chianti give guests staying at Tornano direct access to one of Tuscany's most internationally recognized wine-growing regions.
