Castello di Vicarello

Castello di Vicarello is a historic residence dating back to the year 1100. In 1979, Carlo and Aurora Baccheschi Berti bought the then-abandoned castle to make it their family home, beginning a restoration process that lasted 18 years. The result was a careful recovery of the 12th-century structure, set within 40 hectares of century-old vineyards and olive groves at the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.

In 2003 the family opened the castle as a hotel, keeping its character as an intimate family project — just 10 suites in total — and in 2024 it reopened with new suites following an additional renovation. The complex today combines the main castle building, with its tower and views toward the Tyrrhenian Sea, with more recent structures spread across the estate, including a former watchtower converted into a villa and a contemporary chalet-style suite.

The Baccheschi Berti family's 18-year restoration, undertaken initially as a private home rather than a commercial venture, gives Vicarello a genuinely personal character distinct from properties restored explicitly for hospitality from the outset.

The estate's mix of antiques and Indonesian-inspired design pieces across its 10 suites reflects a deliberately curated, individually decorated approach rather than a uniform hotel-chain aesthetic — each suite reads as a distinct room rather than one of a standardized set.

The explicit inclusion of a contemporary chalet-style suite alongside the historic castle building and converted watchtower is an unusually direct acknowledgment, within this collection, that not every accommodation on a historic estate needs to imitate a period style.

The surrounding Tuscan Maremma, roughly midway between Rome and Florence, gives guests staying at Vicarello access to the region's coastline, the Brunello wine route around Montalcino, and the natural hot springs at Saturnia.
