Gropparello Castle

The origins of Castello di Gropparello probably date to the 8th century, when a defensive fortification was erected over a Roman-era predecessor. The oldest written document dates to the year 810, when Charlemagne granted the castle and its surrounding territory as a fief to the Bishop of Piacenza, Giuliano II. In the early 14th century, Bishop Filippo Fulgosio granted it to his heirs, who held it until 1464, when Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, transferred it to Galeazzo Campofregoso.

In 1599, Duke Ranuccio I Farnese assigned the fortification to Marcantonio Anguissola, who also received the title of Count of Gropparello, founding the Anguissola branch of Gropparello, which held the castle until the 19th century. This family branch died out in 1848 with the death of Gaetano Anguissola. Today the castle combines boutique accommodation in the Torre del Barbagianni with a medieval theme park open to the public, the "Parco delle Fiabe."

The 810 grant by Charlemagne to the Bishop of Piacenza ties Gropparello to the Carolingian practice of consolidating imperial authority in northern Italy by delegating territorial control to ecclesiastical figures.

The succession of ownership — from the Bishop of Piacenza's heirs, to the Campofregoso under Sforza rule, to the Anguissola under Farnese rule — reflects the shifting balance of power among northern Italy's major medieval and Renaissance dynasties, each transfer tied to a change in the region's dominant authority.

The 1848 extinction of the Anguissola di Gropparello branch marks a clean historical endpoint for nearly 250 years of continuous family ownership, a milestone shared by relatively few of the properties in this collection.

The "Parco delle Fiabe" theme park makes Gropparello one of the few properties in this collection with a genuinely established, independently marketed day-visit attraction alongside its overnight accommodation, appealing specifically to families.
