Vigoleno Castle

The borgo of Vigoleno has Roman origins, with a name deriving from the Latin "vicus lyaeo" ("place dedicated to Bacchus"). Vigoleno originated as a military fortress between the 10th and 11th centuries, and its history is tied to that of the castle, which was destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions. It was a fief of the Pallavicino, Visconti and Farnese families, but the Scotti family held possession almost continuously from the 12th century to the 20th.

Set on a ridge between the Ongina and Stirone valleys, on a modest hill overlooking the surrounding hills, Vigoleno castle is a particularly beautiful example of a medieval fortified village, intact in every part — the reason it has been included in "I Borghi più belli d'Italia" (Italy's Most Beautiful Villages) since 2002. Today the complex combines accommodation spread across the castle's central body, its watchtowers, and a dependance within the borgo itself.

The Scotti family's near-continuous eight-century tenure gives Vigoleno a genuinely rare stability of ownership, distinct from the more common pattern of repeated changes of hands seen at many other Italian castles.

The village's inclusion among "I Borghi più belli d'Italia" reflects its recognized status as a complete, intact fortified settlement rather than an isolated restored castle building — the entire hamlet, not just the keep, survives in its historic form.

The watchtower suites, reachable only by stairs, offer a genuinely unusual sleeping arrangement within a medieval defensive structure, distinct from the more conventional room layouts found in the castle's central body.

The surrounding Stirone Regional Park and the Romanesque cathedral town of Fidenza give guests staying at Vigoleno easy access to both a protected natural landscape and a significant piece of Emilian religious architecture.
