The Antico Borgo di Tabiano, dating to the 11th century, began as a military fortress of the Marquises Pallavicino, built atop the ruins of an earlier Roman settlement. Through its first four centuries, the castle's history tracked the broader turbulence of the Italian High and Late Middle Ages — wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines, conflicts between emperor and papacy bringing sieges, destruction, conquest, and betrayal, alongside the more personal dramas of love and conspiracy among the ruling family.
