Castello Scaligero rises directly from the waters of Lake Garda at the narrowest point of the Sirmione peninsula, its crenellated towers reflected in the clear lake below. Built by the Scaligeri (della Scala) lords of Verona from 1259 onwards, the castle served as both a military stronghold and harbour — its curtain walls enclosing a protected port where Scaligero warships were moored. It is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of Scaligero military architecture in Italy. Climbing the main tower rewards visitors with sweeping views over all of Lake Garda, with the Dolomites visible on clear days to the north. The castle sits at the gateway to the charming historic centre of Sirmione, one of the most picturesque towns on the lake.
History
The Scaligeri family commissioned the castle from 1259 as part of their expansion across the Veneto and Lombardy. It passed to the Visconti of Milan in 1387 and later to Venice, which reinforced it against Ottoman threats. Under Venetian rule the castle was expanded and modernised. Napoleon's forces occupied it briefly in the late 18th century. It was declared a national monument in the 19th century and underwent careful restoration, today managed by the Italian Ministry of Culture.
How to Visit
Sirmione is on the southern shore of Lake Garda, 40 km east of Brescia and 35 km west of Verona. Frequent buses run from Brescia and Verona. In summer, ferries connect Sirmione with Desenzano, Peschiera, Bardolino, and other lake towns. The castle is at the entrance of the old town pedestrian zone, a few steps from the main car parks.
