Samuel's Fortress crowns the hill above Ohrid's remarkable UNESCO-listed old town, its reconstructed walls and towers encircling the highest point with sweeping views over Lake Ohrid — one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world, its water so clear and ancient it contains species found nowhere else on earth. Built by Tsar Samuel of the First Bulgarian Empire around 976 AD as his western capital and last stronghold, the fortress was taken by Byzantine Emperor Basil II in 1018 after his devastating defeat of the Bulgarian army. The walls — nearly 2 km long with 24 towers — were reconstructed in the 20th century and illuminated at night, making the hilltop one of the most photogenic evening destinations in the western Balkans. Below the fortress, Ohrid's old town is dense with Byzantine churches, including the extraordinary St. Sophia Cathedral and St. Naum Monastery.
History
The hill at Ohrid was fortified in Hellenistic times. Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria made Ohrid his capital and built the current fortress from around 976, using it as his last refuge against Byzantine pressure. After Byzantine Emperor Basil II captured it in 1018, ending the First Bulgarian Empire, the fortress remained a Byzantine stronghold. It was used by successive rulers — Byzantine, Serbian, Ottoman — until the 19th century. Significant reconstruction of the walls was undertaken in the 20th century.
How to Visit
Ohrid is in southwestern North Macedonia, 170 km from Skopje (2.5 hours by bus or car). Regular buses connect Skopje and Ohrid. The fortress is above the old town, reached by a 20-minute walk up the cobblestone hill path from St. Sophia Cathedral. The town is compact and best explored on foot. Lake Ohrid boat trips are available from the old town harbour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Samuel was the Tsar of the First Bulgarian Empire (r. 976–1014), who made Ohrid his capital and resisted Byzantine expansion for decades. After his defeat by Emperor Basil II, Samuel died of shock upon seeing 15,000 of his soldiers blinded (one eye left to every hundredth man to lead the rest home).
