Castles in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's Antrim coast is one of the most dramatic castle landscapes in the British Isles. Dunluce Castle clings to a basalt sea stack above the Atlantic — a ruin so extreme that part of the kitchen fell into the sea during a dinner party in 1639. Carrickfergus Castle, the best-preserved Norman castle in Ireland, has guarded Belfast Lough for 900 years. The Giant's Causeway, UNESCO World Heritage, frames them with 40,000 volcanic hexagonal columns.
