Niepołomice Castle stands in the centre of the town of the same name, near Kraków, founded in the mid-14th century under King Casimir the Great as a royal hunting lodge for the nearby Niepołomice Forest. The earliest surviving document relating to the castle dates from 1349, and the building was at first considerably more defensive in character than residential.
That character changed under the Jagiellonian kings, who had the castle rebuilt as a Renaissance residence in the mid-16th century, giving it the arcaded courtyard that remains its most recognisable feature today. The castle's fortunes declined in the centuries that followed: Swedish invasions caused damage, and the building was later pressed into service as barracks and as a warehouse rather than a royal residence. A fire in 1800 led to the demolition of its top gallery.
A full restoration carried out between 1991 and 2007 returned the castle to active use, and it now houses a hotel within the historic building, set around its Renaissance courtyard in the heart of Niepołomice.
