Râșnov Fortress (Cetatea Râșnov) is one of the best-preserved examples of a Bauernburg — a 'peasant fortress' — in Transylvania. Unlike the noble or royal castles of the region, which served as aristocratic residences and military bases, Râșnov was built by and for the entire Saxon community of the town: a collective refuge where the townspeople could withdraw during the Ottoman and Tartar raids that swept through the Bârsa plain with terrifying regularity from the 14th through the 17th centuries.
The fortress occupies the summit of a rocky hill rising above the modern town of Râșnov. Within its walls — reached today by gondola from the car park, or on foot via a steep 20-minute path — stands a small village: houses that the peasant families used during sieges, a 13th-century church, wells, granaries, and storage cellars. The community could retreat here and sustain itself for months if necessary. The system worked: Râșnov was never taken by assault.

History
The first fortification at Râșnov was constructed in the early 13th century, probably shortly after the Teutonic Knights established their presence in the Bârsa Land in 1211. The Knights were expelled from Transylvania in 1225, but the fortification they began — or that the Saxon settlers built following their patterns — became the community fortress of the newly established Saxon town of Râșnov.
The fortress was substantially expanded through the 14th and 15th centuries as Ottoman raiding pressure increased. The strategic situation of the Bârsa Land — a broad plain opening southward through the Carpathian passes toward the Danube — made it exceptionally vulnerable to cavalry raids from the Wallachian and Ottoman sides. Râșnov, Bran, and the neighbouring fortifications of the Brașov region together formed a defensive network protecting the most economically productive Saxon towns in Transylvania.
The fortress endured multiple sieges across its history and was never taken. Its practical value as a refuge declined after the 18th century, when the Ottoman threat receded and the fortress walls were no longer maintained. The buildings within the walls gradually fell into disrepair through the 19th century. Restoration began in the 20th century and continues today — the fortress is a working archaeological and heritage site, with ongoing conservation work visible on parts of the structure.
