Jarandilla de la Vera Castle

Jarandilla de la Vera Castle, the castle-palace of the Counts of Oropesa, was built in the 15th century for Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Count of Oropesa. Its most illustrious guest arrived in 1556: the newly abdicated Emperor Charles V lived here for several months while the palace adjoining the Monastery of Yuste, where he would spend his final years, was being completed.

The castle was nearly destroyed in 1808 during the Peninsular War, when it was stormed by French troops. It was adapted as a Parador Nacional in 1966, following restoration.

Today its rooms sit within the castle-palace, recently renovated with simple decor; the bathrooms retain the original parador character, according to guest reviews.

Charles V's documented residence here in 1556, in the months before his final retirement to Yuste, ties Jarandilla de la Vera directly to one of the most consequential abdications in European history.

The castle's near-total destruction in 1808 during the Peninsular War, followed by its 1966 restoration into a parador, gives the property a specific arc of damage and recovery tied to a documented historical conflict.
