About This Tour
The Tower of London has been a royal palace, a fortress, a prison, a mint, and a place of execution — all within one square mile on the north bank of the Thames. William the Conqueror began building it in 1066 and it has not stopped accumulating history since. A Yeoman Warder — one of the famous Beefeater guards who have protected the Tower since 1485 — leads you through the highlights, from the White Tower's medieval armoury to the Jewel House where the Crown Jewels are on permanent display.

Itinerary
Meet your Beefeater guide at the entrance and begin with the outer ward — the medieval walls, towers, and the famous scaffold site on Tower Green where Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey were executed. The Beefeater's personal stories of life inside the Tower are the highlight of many visitors' entire trip.
The Jewel House contains the working regalia of the British monarchy — 23,578 gemstones in total. Highlights include the Imperial State Crown (worn at every state opening of Parliament), the Sovereign's Orb, and the Koh-i-Noor diamond set into the late Queen Mother's crown.
The oldest building in the Tower complex — William the Conqueror's original Norman keep, completed around 1100. Inside, the Royal Armouries collection includes Henry VIII's enormous ceremonial armour and a line of horse armours dating from the Tudor period.
