About This Tour
Carcassonne is not merely a castle — it is an entire fortified city, the largest and most complete medieval walled settlement in Europe. Three kilometres of double ramparts with 52 towers enclose a labyrinth of cobbled streets, a cathedral, a château, and a community that has been continuously inhabited since the Gallo-Roman era. UNESCO World Heritage listed since 1997, it was famously restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc — the architect who also restored Notre-Dame de Paris. Just 90 minutes from Toulouse by coach.

Itinerary
The inner citadel of Carcassonne — a 12th-century castle within the walled city. The audioguide leads you through the barbican, the five towers, and the archaeological museum, explaining how the Trencavel viscounts and later the French crown used this double fortress system to control southwestern France.
Walk the full circuit of the lices — the passage between the inner and outer walls. Fifty-two towers, Gallo-Roman sections, Visigothic repairs, and medieval extensions create a 2,500-year palimpsest of fortification. Inside the walls, explore the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, with its extraordinary Gothic stained glass, and the web of medieval streets beyond.

Insider Tips
Arrive early — the walled city gets very crowded by midday in summer
The best view of Carcassonne is from across the Aude river to the south — 10 minutes' walk from the main gate
Lunch inside the walls is expensive but atmospheric; the Bastide Saint-Louis below has better value restaurants
The night illumination of the ramparts (summer only) is spectacular if you can stay late
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Carcassonne authentic or restored?
Both. The Romans, Visigoths, and medieval lords all built and modified the walls. Viollet-le-Duc's 19th-century restoration was controversial — he used northern French conical towers that some historians dispute — but the fundamental structure is genuinely ancient. The debate itself is part of what makes Carcassonne fascinating.
How much free time is there inside the city?
Approximately 3 hours after the guided Château section, giving you time to walk the ramparts, explore the cathedral, and have lunch inside the walls.
