About This Tour
A private guided circuit through three of eastern Slovenia's most distinctive castles — Ptuj, Borl, and Ormož — with entrance fees to all three included, regional wine tastings at each stop, and a traditional Haloze pastry (haloška gibanica or ocvirkovka) at Borl. Licensed guide Gregor Valentan leads a 5-hour itinerary that can begin at any of the three castles depending on the group's starting point. Private transport between stops is available at extra cost, or guests can self-drive following the guide. This is a boutique, private product — not a mass-market day tour — suited to travellers who want unhurried time at each site with local context rather than a group coach experience. A New activity with no reviews yet.
Highlights
- ✓Three medieval castles in five hours — Ptuj (Slovenia's oldest town, outstanding Regional Museum), Borl (cliff-top fortress above the Drava, Arthurian Grail legend heraldry), Ormož (13th-century Lords of Ptuj foundation, reopened November 2025 after restoration)
- ✓Regional wine tastings at each castle stop, featuring wines from the Haloze and Ormož wine regions — including Šipon/Furmint and local whites characteristic of eastern Slovenian viticulture
- ✓A traditional Haloze pastry (haloška gibanica or ocvirkovka) with wine at Borl — included in the tour as part of the local food programme
- ✓Access to the underground tunnel beneath Ptuj Castle — not on the standard museum ticket — with a regional wine tasting inside the passage
- ✓Private product for up to 2 people with a licensed local guide throughout: flexible start point, small-group pace, and a price that covers the full group rather than individual per-person admission

Itinerary
The starting castle (if departing from Ptuj). The Regional Museum inside the castle holds one of the most complete armory collections in Slovenia, a gallery of Gothic and Baroque painting, and the largest historical musical instrument collection in the country. The guide covers the castle's history from Romanesque origins through Baroque refurbishment, and from the Lords of Ptuj's medieval dominance to the UNESCO-recognised Kurentovanje carnival preserved in the mask collection. The visit ends with a descent into the underground tunnel beneath the castle, which is not on the standard museum ticket, with a regional wine tasting inside.
The tour's most unusual stop: a cliff-top castle above the Drava river with a connection to the Arthurian Grail legend via the inverted anchor heraldry of Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival. The guide explains both the castle's medieval history and its extraordinary 20th-century sequence — WWII internment camp, postwar convalescent home, 1956 refugee centre for Hungarians, resort hotel (1952–1979), closure, and restoration. Wine tasting and a traditional Haloze pastry are included here.
The third castle of the circuit: founded by the same Lords of Ptuj family as Ptuj Castle in the final decades of the 13th century, and substantially remodelled in Classicist style in the early 19th century by Jože Pauer. The saloon's 1810 painting cycle by Alois Gleichenperger — depicting the four continents — is considered among the finest Classicist paintings surviving in Slovenia. The castle park, planted with exotic species including a tulip tree and ginkgo, is a highlight in its own right. Wine tasting included. The castle reopened in November 2025 following its first phase of renovation.
If the tour starts at Borl or Ormož rather than Ptuj, the underground tunnel visit and wine tasting at Ptuj Castle serve as the final stop. The tunnel is accessed through the licensed guide and is not available on the standard museum ticket.

Insider Tips
The tour price (€430) covers the group of up to 2 people, not individual per-person admission — it is a private product, not a per-seat group tour
Start point is flexible based on your accommodation: groups staying in Ptuj typically start at Ptuj Castle; groups staying near the Croatian border may prefer to start at Ormož
Allow time after the tour to walk Ptuj's old town — one of the best-preserved medieval town centres in Slovenia, with the town tower, Dominican monastery, and the 2nd-century Orpheus Monument
