A wooden fortress stood on the site, and King Ottokar II of Bohemia replaced it with a stone castle that became the seat of the Lordship of Poděbrady. King John pledged the lordship and the castle to Hynek of Lichtenburg in 1345, and in 1350 the castle came to the Kunštát family through the marriage of Hynek's daughter to Boček I of Poděbrady. According to legend, King George of Poděbrady, Boček's great-grandson, was born in the castle.
The castle passed to King Vladislaus II in 1495 and stayed with the Bohemian Crown until 1839. It was reconstructed in the Renaissance style between 1548 and 1580 and in the Baroque style in 1723–1724, with further changes after 1750, although a Czech tourism source dates the Baroque work to 1723–1780.
Maria Theresa stayed here several times, and under Joseph II it housed retired army officers. In 1839 the Crown sold the castle and lordship to the Viennese banker Georg Simon Sina. Today the historic part of the castle houses a small hotel with a private wellness area, in the centre of the spa town on the Elbe.
