Highlights
- ✦An archaeological survey showed that the site was already settled more than 2,500 years ago, according to Kudy z nudy
- ✦The château grew from a Renaissance fortress that Jaroslav of Vartenberk built, like the neighbouring brewery, in the middle of the 16th century; Czech sources give 1565 or 1578 for the fortress, so they differ on the exact year
- ✦Among its owners were Jáchym Ondřej Šlik, who was executed in Prague's Old Town Square in 1621, the Waldstein family and the Rohan family
- ✦After the Battle of White Mountain it was no longer a noble residence and served only as an administrative building; it then decayed, was rebuilt insensitively under socialism and for years was used as a hostel
- ✦The neighbouring Svijany brewery bought the neglected complex in 2013 and restored it to the look it had at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries
- ✦The exhibitions include an archaeological display whose most valuable piece is the bronze hoard of the so-called Svijany swans, found in 1854 and dated to the 9th and 10th centuries BC
